CREATING HARMONY THROUGH DIFFERENCES

The reality is that no matter what era or style of popular music you are listening to, from hip-hop to country, you are probably hearing harmony. Finding harmony isn’t difficult, but finding someone to create that illusive perfect harmony with is. Two people with wonderful voices on their own can sing together and have terrible harmony. In other cases, two voices sound fine harmonizing together but fail to capture that magic that artists like Crosby, Stills, and Nash had. One of the reasons CSN created such perfect harmony goes beyond music and strikes to the heart of the unique relationship between the three men. Each member of the band brought a different set of skills and experiences to the table. With the success each of them had prior to teaming up, they all had the chance to develop into seasoned artists. David Crosby had spent time in The Byrds. Stephen Stills was a key part of Buffalo Springfield, a short-lived but extremely influential band. And Graham Nash was a pop star with The Hollies before becoming disillusioned with their musical direction. Crosby was born and raised in Southern California and brought with him all of the musical influences of the west coast. Stephen Stills had a nomadic childhood on American military bases in Florida, Panama, Costa Rica, and El Salvador, and he was heavily influenced by Latin music. Meanwhile, Graham Nash was from the northwest corner of England, raised in the city of Blackpool in Lancashire. The result was three very different men who all contributed in unique ways to the greater group.
